About Vehicle On Road Tests (VORT)

Vehicle On Road Tests are performed by Authorised Examiners, such as Paul Cordingley, who are accredited by the South Australian Government.

After a driving test request is lodged with the Government, a task Paul often performs on behalf of his students, a test route is allocated.

The South Australian Government has identified set Test Start locations. Paul tests from Tranmere (Firle) in the East, to Kilkenny and Glandore in the West - down to Mount Barker and others surrounding.

The set routes radiate out from these start points and have been specifically designed to comprehensively test each learner driver’s knowledge of and skills in adhering to South Australian traffic law and road rules. The allocation of test routes is random.

Paul also frequently assists people from other countries perform these tests if they're looking to convert their overseas drivers license to a South Australian license.

NOTE: Driving Tests SA does not provide a vehicle for use on driving tests. Clients must bring a roadworthy vehicle to the exam either their own car or a Trainers vehicle.

The South Australian Government's Driver's Handbook is an excellent reference guide to help you understand all of the safe driving practices you need to learn while learning to drive and in particular before progressing with your VORT test.

Vehicle On Road Tests

It's comforting to arrive at your Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) knowing what will be expected of you.

How a VORT works

Most often, Vehicle On Road Tests (VORT tests) are performed in the students' own cars OR in the car of the Driving Instructor who taught them, with Paul observing the relevant driving skills from the passenger seat. No other passengers are allowed in a car during a test.

A VORT typically takes about 45 minutes and is comprised of two parts.

VORT test - Part 1

The examiner takes the student on a general drive observing basic driving skills, such as:-

  • Turning onto and off of busy roads
  • Changing lanes
  • Response to traffic lights and roundabouts - both turning and proceeding straight ahead
  • Recognition of school zones and adherence to related road rules
  • Obeying STOP and GIVE WAY signs

VORT test - Part 2

The examiner assesses your ability to complete five slow speed manoeuvres:-

  1.  Entering and leaving an Angle Park
  2.  Entering and leaving a Parallel Park
  3.  Undertaking a U-Turn in traffic
  4.  Making a 3-Point Turn
  5.  Leaving the kerb into traffic

Part 1 is worth 90% and Part 2 10% of the total test score. A minimum score of 90% is required to Pass.

Any Road Law breach means the driver will immediately fail the test.

At the end of the test you will receive a copy of the Marking Sheet which shows your score and describes any faults made during your drive.

If unsuccessful, the Marking Sheet informs you of any Immediate Fail items and explains the improvements required to improve the standard of your driving.

If you Fail, you must wait a minimum of 14 days to resit your driving test (with any Authorised Examiner), allowing you further time to fine-tune and improve weaker skills.

When you PASS your VORT practical driving test, Paul will issue you with a Certificate of Competency. Production of your Certificate at a Service SA Customer Service Centre will enable you to obtain your 'P1' provisional licence.

Things to remember for your VORT assessment

To enable your test to commence, it is a legal requirement that you:-

  • Bring your Learner’s Permit / Temporary Driving Permit

  • Bring your proof of identity (including your photo)

This is required for a Temporary Learner’s Permit to be issued; and for Temporary Driver Permit (Overseas Licence) holders. (eg Passport, Proof of Age Card, expired Learner’s Permit Card)

  • A vehicle check will be performed on your vehicle

It is mandatory before the start of a VORT exam to ensure your vehicle is deemed roadworthy.

Important

NOTE: Refunds policy.

  • If you attend your test without being able to meet all requirements above, you will still be charged the full driving test fee. Please do arrive prepared, as we do not want you to be disappointed.
  • If you do not attend your test as booked or cancel less than seven (7) Days before test day, the full driving test fee will be charged.
  • All cancelled bookings will be charged an admin fee.

Key Conditions
under South Australian Law, for applying for a VORT driving exam

  • You must comply with all Learners Permit conditions.
  • You must present your current learners permit/temporary driving permit to the VORT Authorised Examiner at the beginning of the test.
If the permit does not have a photograph, additional identification such as a proof of age card, passport or other acceptable documentation must be produced.
  • You must be punctual, arrive 10 minutes early or you may forfeit your VORT.
  • If your vehicle fails the roadworthiness test, your test will be cancelled. Refunds are not available.
  • You must allow an Authorised Person (a Government employee who has clearly identified himself or herself) to observe, from within the test vehicle if requested. The Authorised Person will ask the Instructor to produce your Learner’s Permit.
You will not be allowed to carry passengers (or animals) during a VORT. (The Authorised Examiner and any Authorised Persons are exempt.)

Important Things to Note

  • The VORT cannot be started earlier than 5 minutes before or later than 15 minutes after the booked time. If you are not ready to commence the VORT during this allocated time, you will forfeit your test and full payment will be required – No Refunds.

  • The test is an overview of your knowledge and driving skills. The VORT Examiner’s role is to observe and progressively record – they must only give directions and parameters as required. The ability to drive and perform manoeuvres is your own responsibility.

  • An interpreter is not permitted to ride within the vehicle during a VORT. Prior to the beginning of the test and with assistance of the interpreter, the Authorised Examiner must explain the meaning of any hand signals to be used during the test. At the end of the test, the Authorised Examiner must explain the test result to the driver with assistance from the interpreter.

  • Leaner’s Permit conditions still apply until an appropriate licence is obtained from a Service SA Centre even though the test has been passed and a Certificate of Competency has been issued.
